The Path to ITBA Certification

Obtaining rank through the ITBA has four steps:

  • Application

  • Evaluation

  • Training / Support

  • Testing

How does it work?

Application

There are two parts to an ITBA application. The first is a form that covers your background and experience, and it takes most applicants less than 10 minutes to complete.

The second part of the application is a video submission where you demonstrate your knowledge of basic techniques as well as your current form. More information is included in the application materials and will feel very familiar to most Taekwondo practitioners.

The application requires a $25 non-refundable fee.

Evaluation

After receiving your application, one of our evaluators will review your materials and determine your readiness level for testing. They will reach out to you to and discuss where you are and address any concerns you may have about the process.

Training / Support

This stage is unique to each individual. Our goal is to ensure that if and when an applicant moves forward with testing for a new rank, they are fully prepared and will be successful in obtaining that new certification. Our standards are high and our goal is to set every individual up for success.

While we do not currently mandate a specific amount of time that must pass between rank certifications, the practical reality is that it normally takes several years between ranks and this time increases proportionally as we enter higher black belt ranks. This is a complex topic that we are happy to discuss with all applicants, but the bottom line is that there are no shortcuts to rank advancement in Taekwondo or any other martial art.

Applicants will have the full option to train on their own or take advantage of training offered either by the ITBA or one of our affiliated schools. This choice will not affect the process.

Testing

Our tests are held at a number of ITBA locations throughout the year. These are currently limited to a few locations in the United States but we are actively developing our international presence and are also evaluating the feasibility of virtual testing in certain circumstances.

Our premiere test location is in New York and takes place twice a year in early Spring and Fall.

Next Steps

If you are not yet an ITBA member but are interested in obtaining rank through our organization, please schedule a conversation with a member of our leadership team. They would be happy to answer any questions you may have about our organization or the certification process.
